Blogger Released Free SSL (HTTPS) for Custom Domains

Under: , ,
Yes! Blogger Users, you read it right. Blogger released free SSL (https) Certificate for Custom Domains. So from now, you can easily get free SSL certificate directly from Blogger. Previously, Blogger only supports SSL for Blogspot sub-domains and if we want to use secure https (SSL) for our blogger custom domain then we must have to purchase it from SSL providers but from now Google's Blogger itself providing SSL certificate for custom domains too. BigRock offers many coupons for cheap SSL certificates, you can also use GoDaddy. What you are waiting for? Let's check out its benefits and how you can enable it and make your Blogger blog more secure.
Before using Free SSL certificate for our blog, we must know what exactly is SSL and how can it benefit us.
Check: How to Setup Freenom Domains (.tk, .ml, .cf, .ga, .gq) as Blogger Custom Domain?

What is SSL Certificate?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer which ensures the security of a website with a user. We usually do the online transactions, fill our personal information in desired forms so we do to send our information to the web servers. So we need a secure connection in order to protect our data and here the SSL certificate matters. By SSL certificate, HTTPS establishes an encrypted connection between a web server and a user so any third person can't access the particular information.

Moreover, most of the sites have a unique SSL Certificate this helps in identifying a secure connection. Any site that is pretending to have a secure SSL, HTTPS connection, and its certificate is not verified or does not match then your browser will show such warning message.

Why Moving To HTTPS is Recommended?

You must know that Google gives a slight boost to the rank of sites which are HTTPS enabled. But surely Google will increase the effect of this “boost” and of course, even a slight boost in SERP is essential to overcome our competitors.
Please Keep Following Points in mind before enabling SSL (HTTPS) :
  • Your traffic will be down for few days until Google correctly indexes all your URLs with HTTPS.
  • During this all process, if you made any mistake, then your blog can go down. So make these changes on such time when no or very few people are watching your blog.
    Check: How to Add/Install Google Analytics to Blogger to check real-time count on your blog.
  • You’ll have to remove all the widgets that are hosted/attached to non-SSL hosts as they won't work. I will surely provide the details of all the necessary changes in future posts.

How to Enable FREE HTTPS SSL Certificate for Blogger Custom Domain?

Roughly, a basic SSL certificate costs about $10/year but Blogger now offers a free SSL to its all Blogger users. No matters if you blog is hosted on Blogspot subdomain or a custom domain.
Note: This feature is currently in testing mode (beta version) and soon will be live at Blogger.com Dashboard but you can check and enable it through Blogger in Draft.
  1. Sign in to Blogger in Draft - (https://draft.blogger.com)
  2. Now, Select a blog on which you would like to enable HTTPS.

  3. Go to Settings > Basic > HTTPS Settings.

  4. In HTTPS Availability, select YES.
    It might take some time to enable HTTPS (SSL) on your blog. So wait for few minutes and let another HTTPS redirect option be ready for enabling.

  5. HTTPS redirect will help you in getting your HTTP traffic redirect to your new secured HTTPS server, so don't forget to wait sometime and enable it.

Congrats! Now your blog has a unique SSL certificate which will surely enhance your SERP and provide an extra layer of security to your blog. Now check your blog with https:// and enjoy free SSL support from blogger dancing on your blogger custom domain enabled blog.
Moreover, you can try blogger outreaching service.

Thank you. Many people have been posting tutorials without mentioning that you need to go to draft.blogger instead of the regular page.

I don't suppose you know how to keep blogger dynamic from eating HTML when you change from Compose to HTML modes do you? Because that would be a game changer :)

After you changed the https availability wait for some times it will then allow you to change the https redirect. After that still you have to wait for 5 to 10 minutes for google to process your blogger costom domain. My website: https://www.news-topic.in/ works fine after that

Hammad Ansari on 13 February, 2018 said...

@Jack Gerdes

Go to your Blogger Dashboard > Settings > Basic

and Under Blog Address Click on Edit.
Now Tick Redirect arabes1.com to www.arabes.com

Wait for sometimes and You're Done.

Hi,
Tried draft.blogger but in my blog I can't select a yes option with the https (step 4)? Any ideas what to do now?
I'm still working on the blog so it's not public yet but that should not make a difference I understand?

Hammad Ansari on 18 February, 2018 said...

@AAHH
Why you need a SSL if your blog is not public?
Buddy! You need to make your blog public in order to use SSL. Cheers!

Add a CNAME record in your domain's DNS settings.

@ and point it to www

Then click redirect arabes1.com to www.arabes1.com in your blogger's blog settings tab.

Hello, Hammad!
How're you doing?

I just used your guide and it was easy and worked too. Still, there's something that is not working well.

When I open my blogger blog, it redirects me to the homepage (with https and in green color), but when it completes loading, the green color goes away i.e. the blog goes in the half-safe condition.

Please take a look at the my blog for see it yourself.
My blog: www.jobsdeal.in

Thanks in advance!
Saif

@Sterb Sagar

Yes! You need to submit your blog's HTTPS version to Google Search Console.

Hammad Ansari on 08 March, 2018 said...

@Jobs Deal
This happens due to mixed content i.e. you blog is using both https and http scripts.

I request you to change all http scripts to https one.
You can take help of https://www.whynopadlock.com/ to find the http scripts on your blog.

I just discovered it when I saw the 'bell' notification in the Post tab, telling me HTTPS for custom domains is now available... Google is silent about this update. I feel very glad and happy they're offering it for free and I no longer need to buy SSL certificate.

Lorenza on 11 March, 2018 said...

Thank you so much. I didn't know about this option because it showed unavailable. When I went to draft.blogger.com it worked! Took less than 5 min and now I have a ssl enabled site. Hope there's nothing else I have to do besides enabling ssl and redirects. Thanks again! :-)

Successfully converted my blog from http:// to https:// using the blogger new features for custom domains. Thanks admin for the useful post, but there is more task we need to perform after migrating our blog to secure SSL, i.e. Changing Google Analytics settings, Adding new property in Search Console, etc.

I have successfully done mine. Thanks admin

Admin on 01 April, 2018 said...

@Hammad Ansari
Google never host the domain in nacked form. So basically domain with WWW is a sub-domain. And when you turned on the HTTPS Availability, Google installs an SSL certificate issued by Let's Encrypt, to the server for your sub-domain. So in simple words, you have the SSL certificate for the sub-domain not for the main domain. So whenever you visit your site (without www) with https, you will get an error.
